In the Beginning
In 1986 we started writing cutting optimization software. Over twenty years later
we are still adding new features and making improvements. Customer feedback dictated
that we develop software that generates efficient and practical cutting plans. With
that in mind our cutting layouts have a strong tendency to group pieces of the same
size together, which limits saw setups balancing material efficiency and time spent.
The Task
Cutting optimization is an imposing problem. Twenty pieces placed end to end can be
arranged over four quadrillion ways. When cutting panels, rotating pieces, rip and
crosscutting patterns, multiple sheet stock sizes and other variations must be con-
sidered. Thus, all arrangements of cutting plans cannot be reviewed even with today's
super fast personal computers.
The Problem
Strictly finding the most material efficient layouts often results in the overall job
suffering. This approach can exhaust the small and medium size pieces on the initial
layouts leaving the larger pieces for the balance of the job, which can't possibly be
arranged efficiently.
The Solution
Our user defined Target yield range gives the program stopping points in the layout
generations. If the target yield is met or exceeded the program halts execution,
calculates how many sheets can be cut using that pattern, substracts the pieces used
from the cut list, restarts the process and continues until the pieces are exhausted
for that yield target. This process repeats for the range of yield targets. Then the
most efficient group of layouts is presented. Our unique approach has proven to be
very effective at screening a reasonable amount of canidate layouts to insure satis-
factory results.
Further Increasing Yield
Our Power search option does exhaustive analysis to determine the most beneficial set
of layouts. This can take considerable time, but often boosts material efficiency.
Power search analyses the best layouts to use from each target yield. It determines
how each layout considered affects layouts downstream. Thousands or tens of thousands
of layout combinations may be analyzed. The best results are then presented.
A Clear View
Multi-view is the jewel of The Itemizer software. This feature shows all or any
portion of a group of layouts on one screen. This comprehensive overview provides for
instant analysis of the cutting plans. Any tweaks desired to the layouts to gain
material efficiency or ease of cutting are readily apparent and easily made.
User Control
We must take advantage of all available space on layouts, but for practical reasons
there are times when rearranging some pieces are desired. The Part bin provides a
means to rearrange, reorient or relocate pieces within or between layouts. Pieces can
be added to the Part bin after layouts are generated to boost efficiency or pieces
can be withheld from layout generation in a locked Part bin for manual placement. The
user has complete control of the cutting plans.
Shop Drawings
After the layouts are finalized they can be printed either individually or as a
multi-view group, which reduces the quantity of drawings required for the shop. DXF
files can be generated for CNC and custom stick-on labels can be printed to track
parts through the shop.
